Maintaining Your Hardwood Floors: Tips from the Experts

Maintaining Your Hardwood Floors: Tips from the Experts

Hardwood floors are more than just a design choice—they're an investment in your home's style and value. With proper care, they can last for generations. However, without routine maintenance, even the finest wood can dull, scratch, or warp. At Legacy Custom Floors, we help homeowners protect their flooring investment through expert guidance and services.

The Value of Preserving Hardwood Floors

Hardwood Adds Long-Term Value

Well-maintained wood flooring can significantly increase your home's resale value. Unlike synthetic flooring options, real wood gains character over time—if preserved properly.

Neglect Can Lead to Expensive Repairs

Water damage, surface scratches, and fading can all shorten a floor’s life. Timely care not only keeps the wood looking pristine but also avoids costly refinishing or replacement.

Daily, Weekly, and Seasonal Maintenance Routines

Daily Floor Care Habits

Sweep your floors using a microfiber mop to trap dust and grit. Cleaning up spills immediately protects the finish and prevents stains or warping.

Weekly Upkeep Practices

Vacuum using a brushless hardwood-safe attachment. Mop with a lightly damp cloth using a wood-specific cleaner. Check high-traffic areas for wear.

Seasonal Adjustments to Protect Your Floors

In winter, use a humidifier to prevent gapping due to dry air. During humid summer months, air circulation increases to reduce moisture buildup that can cause cupping.

Do’s and Don'ts of Cleaning Hardwood Floors

What You Should Always Do

Use only cleaners formulated for hardwood. Place mats at entrances to reduce dirt and grit. Use felt pads on furniture legs to prevent dents and scratches.

What You Should Avoid

Avoid steam mops or excess water, which can seep into the seams and damage the wood. Don’t use abrasive cleaning products like ammonia or vinegar—they erode the finish.

Need help choosing the right cleaner or want to confirm if your floor is properly sealed?

Common Maintenance Mistakes and Expert Advice

Using General Purpose Cleaners

Non-wood cleaners may promise a shine but often strip away the protective finish, leading to dullness or long-term damage.

Skipping Floor Protection

Furniture without protective pads or walking in high heels can cause deep gouges. Area rugs and protective pads are essential, especially in busy areas.

Ignoring Small Issues Until They Worsen

What starts as a minor scratch or water mark can lead to warped boards or rot. It’s always best to address even small concerns early—Legacy Custom Floors offers consultations for such issues.

Maintenance Tools and Products We Recommend

Trusted Tools for Everyday Use

Stick with microfiber mops and soft-bristled brooms for everyday cleaning. Choose a vacuum that has a "hard floor" mode to prevent scratching.

Safe Cleaning Solutions

Only use pH-neutral cleaners that are designed for finished wood flooring. Never use oil-based soaps unless specifically recommended, as they can leave residue and interfere with future refinishing.

When to Call a Professional

If your floors have lost their shine or are showing signs of wear beyond what, daily care can fix, it may be time for professional maintenance. Our experts can assess your floor’s condition and recommend refinishing or repair when needed.

Conclusion: Protect Your Investment with Professional Help

Choosing the Right Hardwood Species for Your Home

Choosing the Right Hardwood Species for Your Home

Selecting the perfect hardwood flooring goes beyond just picking a color or finish. The wood species you choose will impact your floor's durability, look, maintenance needs, and how it performs in your home’s environment. At Legacy Custom Floors, we guide homeowners through every detail of hardwood species selection to ensure your investment suits your lifestyle and space.

Why Hardwood Species Selection Matters

Durability, Appearance, and Longevity

Different wood species vary greatly in hardness, grain pattern, and color range. These characteristics affect how your floors look, how well they hold up to wear and tear, and even how they respond to changes in temperature and humidity.

Choosing the right species ensures your flooring not only matches your design vision but also performs well in your home's specific conditions—whether it's a high-traffic area, a moisture-prone room, or a climate-sensitive zone like Vancouver.

Overview of Popular Hardwood Species

Oak: Classic and Versatile

Oak is one of the most popular hardwood flooring choices across North America. Available in both red and white varieties, it offers a broad grain pattern and mid-range hardness that makes it both attractive and practical.

  • Red Oak features warm undertones and a pronounced grain.

  • White Oak is slightly harder and has a more subtle, modern look.

Oak is widely available and stains well, making it a great choice for homeowners who want customization flexibility.

Maple: Clean and Contemporary

Maple flooring is known for its smooth, consistent grain and pale tone. It’s a bit harder than red oak and offers a sleek, modern feel that works beautifully in minimalist interiors.

Maple resists denting well but is less absorbent of stains, making color changes trickier without professional help.

Cherry: Warm and Elegant

Cherry offers a rich, reddish-brown tone that deepens with age. It has a finer grain and smoother texture compared to oak and maple, giving it a refined appearance.

While cherry is softer and more prone to denting, its visual warmth makes it a popular choice for formal living spaces and low-traffic areas.

Pros, Cons, and Best Use Cases of Each Species

Oak: The All-Around Performer

Pros: Durable, stain-friendly, widely available
Cons: Pronounced grain may not suit all design styles
Best for: High-traffic areas, families, and custom stain projects

Maple: The Minimalist’s Favorite

Pros: Very hard, subtle grain, light color
Cons: Doesn’t absorb stains evenly, less color flexibility
Best for: Contemporary designs, kitchens, and modern homes

Cherry: For Elegant Interiors

Pros: Rich color, smooth grain, ages beautifully
Cons: Softer, more prone to scratches
Best for: Bedrooms, offices, or formal dining rooms

Each species carries distinct pros and cons, and the best fit often depends on both aesthetic preferences and the space function. Our Hardwood Flooring Services can help align material choices with lifestyle needs.

Style and Budget Considerations

Cost Differences Between Species

Oak is generally the most budget-friendly of the three and offers excellent durability for its price. Maple tends to sit in the mid-range due to its density and clean finish, while cherry is considered a premium option.

Prices also vary depending on plank width, finish type, and sourcing, so discussing budget during your design consultation is essential to choosing the right species.

Matching Species with Interior Styles

  • Traditional homes pair beautifully with oak and cherry.

  • Modern or minimalist interiors benefit from maple’s light tones and subtle grain.

  • Transitional spaces can mix oak flooring with a contemporary finish for a fresh yet classic look.

Climate Compatibility for Vancouver Homes

Why Climate Matters in Flooring Choice

Vancouver’s damp, cool climate can impact how hardwood floors behave. Wood naturally expands and contracts with temperature and humidity changes, so choosing a stable species and proper installation method is key.

Best Species for Vancouver's Conditions

  • White Oak offers strong dimensional stability, making it ideal for homes in coastal environments.

  • Maple, though dense, may be more sensitive to moisture and needs proper sealing.

  • Cherry should be used with caution in high-moisture rooms and is best kept in climate-controlled areas.

At Legacy Custom Floors, we help homeowners in Vancouver and the surrounding regions make climate-smart flooring decisions that ensure long-term beauty and performance.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the most durable hardwood species?

White oak and maple are among the most durable options. They resist wear and dents better than softer woods like cherries.

Is cherry wood good for high traffic areas?

Cherry blossoms are better suited for low-traffic areas. It’s softer than oak or maple and more prone to surface damage.

Can I refinish all hardwood species the same way?

Most species can be refinished, but some—like maple—require more expertise due to stain absorption issues.

How do I know which hardwood fits my style?

Consider your overall home aesthetic. Oak suits traditional homes, maple fits modern styles, and cherry complements warm, elegant designs.

Does humidity affect hardwood differently depending on species?

Yes. Some species, like white oak, offer better moisture resistance and are more stable in humid climates like Vancouver.

Top Hardwood Flooring Trends in Vancouver for 2025

Top Hardwood Flooring Trends in Vancouver for 2025

As we move further into 2025, Vancouver homeowners and interior designers are seeking fresh, modern, and eco-conscious hardwood flooring solutions that match both aesthetic and functional expectations. From trending finishes to sustainable choices, staying on top of flooring trends can make a significant difference in your home’s overall appeal and value.

Trending Colors, Finishes & Species

Lighter Tones and Natural Finishes

One of the most significant flooring trends in Vancouver for 2025 is the shift toward lighter, more natural tones. White oak, birch, and maple are making waves due to their clean, Scandinavian-inspired aesthetic. These lighter shades reflect more light, making homes feel larger and more open—a crucial factor in many of Vancouver’s compact urban homes and condos.

Natural matte finishes are replacing high-gloss sheens, giving floors a more organic, understated look that enhances the wood’s natural grain. This finish is also more forgiving when it comes to showing dust, scratches, or wear, making it a practical choice for busy households.

Wide Planks & Long Boards

Wide plank hardwood floors are expected to dominate in 2025. These planks provide a modern, spacious feel and reduce the number of visible seams in the flooring. Long boards are also on-trend, offering a seamless, continuous visual flow that enhances the feeling of space in open-plan homes.

Trending Wood Species

White oak remains the top choice for its durability and attractive grain pattern. Hickory and walnut are also gaining popularity, with walnut favored for its rich, dark hues and hickory for its striking natural color variations.

Designer Recommendations

Blending Texture and Tone

Leading Vancouver designers recommend mixing texture and tone to add depth to spaces. Hand-scraped and wire-brushed finishes offer a rustic, lived-in feel that contrasts beautifully with sleek, modern furnishings.

Designers are also favoring custom stain options to tailor hardwood floors to individual homes and design palettes. From pale beige washes to muted greys, customized finishes help achieve a highly curated, on-trend look.

Pairing with Contemporary Elements

Hardwood floors are increasingly being paired with minimalist cabinetry, mixed-metal fixtures, and neutral wall tones to create cohesive modern interiors. Local interior design experts also highlight the importance of continuity, recommending consistent flooring throughout main living spaces to create visual harmony.

Environmental Influences (Sustainability)

Eco-Friendly Materials

Sustainability remains a driving factor in 2025 hardwood flooring trends. Vancouver homeowners are increasingly opting for FSC-certified woods and sustainably harvested materials. Engineered hardwood made with recycled or rapidly renewable resources is gaining traction for its reduced environmental impact and cost-efficiency.

Low-VOC and Non-Toxic Finishes

In an effort to maintain healthier indoor environments, low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) and water-based finishes are more popular than ever. These finishes reduce off-gassing and contribute to better indoor air quality, aligning with the eco-conscious values of many Vancouver residents.

Local Sourcing

Many homeowners are also prioritizing locally sourced wood products to minimize carbon footprints and support local economies. Canadian-sourced hardwoods, particularly maple and oak, are gaining favor not just for their quality but also for their reduced environmental impact.

Why Hardwood Floors Are a Smart Investment for Vancouver Homes

Why Hardwood Floors Are a Smart Investment for Vancouver Homes

When it comes to home improvement projects that offer both immediate satisfaction and long-term value, few compare to installing hardwood flooring. For Vancouver homeowners looking to enhance their living space while also increasing property value, hardwood floors are a smart, stylish, and enduring investment.

Benefits of Hardwood Flooring

Durability & Longevity

One of the primary reasons homeowners opt for hardwood flooring is its remarkable durability. Unlike carpet or vinyl, hardwood floors can last for decades—even generations—with proper maintenance. Solid hardwood can be sanded and refinished multiple times, allowing it to look brand new even after years of wear.

The Pacific Northwest's climate, while occasionally damp, is well-suited for hardwood floors when properly installed and sealed. Engineered hardwoods, in particular, offer excellent resistance to moisture, making them a practical choice for Vancouver homes.

Aesthetic Appeal & Timeless Style

Hardwood flooring brings a natural elegance that other materials struggle to match. Its warmth, character, and visual appeal make it a favorite among interior designers and homeowners alike. Whether you prefer traditional oak or a more modern maple or walnut, hardwood offers a timeless aesthetic that complements virtually any decor style.

Additionally, hardwood floors are versatile. They can be stained in a wide range of tones, from rich dark hues to light, Scandinavian-style finishes, allowing homeowners to tailor their space to their personal taste.

Real Estate Value & Resale Impact

When it comes time to sell your home, hardwood flooring can be a game-changer. Real estate professionals in Vancouver frequently note that homes with hardwood floors tend to sell faster and at higher prices compared to homes with other types of flooring. According to national data, up to 54% of homebuyers are willing to pay more for a home with hardwood floors.

Vancouver's competitive housing market makes it crucial to stand out. Hardwood floors give listings an edge by presenting a clean, high-end look that suggests care and quality throughout the home. They are also easier to maintain, a benefit that many prospective buyers find appealing.

Cost vs ROI Analysis

Initial Costs

Hardwood flooring can require a larger upfront investment compared to materials like laminate or carpet. In Vancouver, the average cost for hardwood floor installation ranges between $10 and $18 per square foot depending on the wood species and complexity of the job.

Long-Term Return on Investment

Despite the initial expense, the long-term ROI of hardwood flooring is compelling. It can increase your home's value by as much as 2.5%, a significant boost in Vancouver's high-value property market. Plus, its long lifespan means that you'll save on replacement and maintenance costs over time.

Hardwood floors also contribute to better indoor air quality, especially when replacing carpets that trap dust, allergens, and pet dander. This health benefit can be an additional selling point, especially for families and health-conscious buyers.

Vancouver Market Insights

Local Buyer Preferences

In a city like Vancouver, where style meets sustainability, hardwood floors are more than just a design choice—they're an expectation in many mid-to-high-end homes. Buyers often prioritize homes with eco-friendly, durable, and attractive features, making hardwood flooring a top contender.

Popular Styles in Vancouver Homes

Light, wide-plank oak flooring is particularly trendy in Vancouver homes, offering a clean and contemporary look. Natural finishes that showcase wood grain are also in demand, reflecting a broader design movement toward organic, minimalist interiors.

Engineered hardwoods are gaining traction in areas like Vancouver due to their enhanced stability and compatibility with radiant heating systems—a popular feature in many newly constructed or renovated homes.

Conclusion: Upgrade with Confidence

Hardwood flooring is more than a surface upgrade—it's a strategic investment in your home's future value and appeal. Its durability, timeless beauty, and resale benefits make it a smart choice for Vancouver homeowners who want to enjoy their home now and increase its marketability later.

If you're considering hardwood flooring for your home, Legacy Custom Floors offers expert consultation and installation services tailored to the Vancouver market. Contact us today to explore your options and take the first step toward a lasting investment in your property.

How to Prevent Laminate Floors from Buckling: Essential Tips for Maintaining Your Floors

How to Prevent Laminate Floors from Buckling: Essential Tips for Maintaining Your Floors

Introduction

Laminate flooring is a popular choice for homeowners due to its durability, cost-effectiveness, and wide variety of designs. However, like all flooring materials, laminate floors can face issues over time, and one of the most common problems is buckling. Buckling occurs when laminate flooring begins to lift or warp, creating an uneven surface that can be both unsightly and hazardous.

Understanding why laminate floors buckle and how to prevent this issue can help you protect your investment and maintain the aesthetic appeal of your home. In this blog, we’ll explore the causes of laminate floor buckling and provide helpful tips on how to prevent it. Additionally, we’ll share advice on what to do if your laminate floors are already buckling, and how professional flooring services can help.

What is Laminate Floor Buckling?

Buckling is when laminate flooring panels rise or warp away from the subfloor, creating uneven areas on the surface. This issue can result from several factors, such as moisture, temperature changes, improper installation, or excessive wear and tear. Buckling is different from other common laminate flooring issues like gaps or cracking, as it involves significant lifting of the boards.

Common Causes of Laminate Floor Buckling

To effectively prevent laminate floors from buckling, it’s important to first understand what causes this problem. Several factors can contribute to the buckling of laminate flooring.

1. Moisture Damage

Moisture is one of the primary causes of laminate floor buckling. Laminate flooring is made of several layers, including a core layer that can absorb water. When moisture seeps into the laminate, it can cause the core to expand and swell, leading to buckling. High humidity or water spills that are not cleaned up promptly can contribute to this issue.

2. Improper Installation

Incorrect installation can lead to several issues with laminate flooring, including buckling. If the laminate boards are not installed properly, they may not have the necessary expansion gaps along the edges, which are essential for allowing the material to contract and expand with changes in temperature and humidity. Without these gaps, the flooring can buckle over time.

3. Subfloor Issues

An uneven or damaged subfloor can also cause laminate floors to buckle. The subfloor must be smooth, dry, and level for the laminate to sit properly. If the subfloor has imperfections, moisture issues, or unevenness, it can lead to pressure points on the laminate flooring, causing it to lift.

4. Temperature Fluctuations

Extreme temperature changes can cause the laminate boards to expand and contract. Laminate flooring is sensitive to temperature, and when exposed to excessive heat or cold, the boards may warp, resulting in buckling. This is particularly common in areas with poor climate control or extreme seasonal changes.

5. Heavy Furniture or Traffic

Placing heavy furniture or subjecting your laminate floors to excessive foot traffic can put pressure on the boards. Over time, the pressure can cause the laminate to buckle or develop dents and cracks. Moving furniture without using protective pads or dragging heavy items across the floor can exacerbate this issue.

How to Prevent Laminate Floors from Buckling

Now that you know the common causes of laminate floor buckling, let’s discuss how to prevent this issue from happening. By following a few simple maintenance tips and taking precautions, you can protect your laminate floors from buckling and keep them looking their best for years.

1. Control Moisture Levels

Moisture control is key to preventing laminate floor buckling. Here are some steps you can take to manage moisture levels:

  • Use a Humidifier: If you live in an area with high humidity, using a humidifier can help maintain a consistent moisture level in your home. This will prevent excessive moisture from seeping into your laminate flooring.

  • Clean Spills Promptly: Always clean up any water or spills immediately to avoid moisture absorption. Use a dry mop or towel to soak up any excess moisture.

  • Avoid Wet Mopping: When cleaning laminate floors, avoid using excessive water. Wet mopping can cause moisture to seep into the laminate joints. Instead, use a slightly damp mop or a cleaning solution designed specifically for laminate floors.

2. Ensure Proper Installation

Proper installation is critical in preventing laminate floor buckling. If you’re installing the flooring yourself, make sure to:

  • Leave Expansion Gaps: Leave adequate expansion gaps around the perimeter of the room, especially along walls, door frames, and other fixed structures. This allows the laminate to expand and contract with changes in temperature and humidity.

  • Check the Subfloor: Ensure that the subfloor is level, clean, and dry before installation. If the subfloor is uneven or damaged, it should be repaired before installing laminate flooring.

  • Follow Manufacturer Guidelines: Always follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions to ensure that your laminate flooring is installed correctly. Incorrect installation can lead to buckling and other issues.

3. Maintain a Consistent Temperature

Temperature fluctuations can cause laminate flooring to expand and contract. To prevent this, aim to maintain a consistent temperature in your home. Avoid exposing laminate floors to extreme heat or cold. Some steps to maintain temperature control include:

  • Use Thermostats: Install a programmable thermostat to maintain a consistent temperature, especially during seasonal transitions.

  • Avoid Direct Sunlight: Direct sunlight can cause laminate floors to heat up and warp. Use curtains or blinds to protect your floors from intense sunlight, especially in rooms with large windows.

4. Protect Floors from Heavy Furniture

Heavy furniture and constant foot traffic can exert pressure on laminate floors, leading to buckling. Here’s how you can prevent this:

  • Use Furniture Pads: Place furniture pads or coasters under the legs of your furniture to prevent them from scratching or denting the laminate flooring. This will also reduce the pressure on the boards and help them maintain their shape.

  • Avoid Dragging Furniture: Never drag heavy furniture across laminate floors. Always lift and move furniture carefully to avoid damaging the flooring.

  • Limit Traffic in High-Traffic Areas: Use rugs or mats in high-traffic areas to reduce wear and tear on the laminate. You can also use floor runners to protect the surface from daily use.

5. Regular Maintenance and Inspection

Regular maintenance and periodic inspections can help identify potential problems before they lead to buckling. Here are some maintenance tips:

  • Inspect for Gaps or Lifting: Periodically check for gaps or areas where the laminate may be lifting. If you notice any issues, take action immediately to avoid further damage.

  • Clean Regularly: Keep your laminate floors clean by sweeping or vacuuming regularly to remove dust and debris. Use a laminate-friendly cleaner to maintain the finish without causing damage.

  • Buff Out Scratches: If you notice any minor scratches or scuff marks, use a soft cloth and laminate cleaner to buff them out. This will help maintain the appearance of the floors.

What to Do If Your Laminate Floors Are Buckling

If you notice that your laminate floors are already buckling, it’s important to address the issue as soon as possible to prevent further damage. Here are some steps you can take:

1. Identify the Source of Moisture

If moisture is the cause of the buckling, locate and address the source of the moisture. This could be a leak, high humidity, or a spill that wasn’t cleaned up. Fix any plumbing issues and ensure the humidity levels in your home are under control.

2. Allow the Floors to Dry Out

If the laminate flooring is wet, allow it to dry out completely before attempting any repairs. You can use fans or dehumidifiers to help speed up the drying process. Avoid walking on the wet areas to prevent further damage.

3. Contact a Professional

If the buckling persists or the damage is severe, it’s best to consult a flooring professional. A professional can assess the situation and determine whether the laminate flooring needs to be replaced or if repairs can be made. They can also inspect the subfloor and ensure that there are no underlying issues contributing to the buckling.

FAQs

  • Yes, depending on the severity of the buckling, laminate floors can be repaired. In some cases, the affected boards can be replaced, while in other cases, the issue may be resolved by fixing moisture issues and re-leveling the floor.

  • Laminate floors can last for many years if properly maintained. However, without proper care or if subjected to moisture or improper installation, they may begin to show signs of wear or buckling within 5 to 10 years.

  • Laminate flooring is not ideal for high-humidity areas like bathrooms or basements. If you plan to install laminate in such areas, ensure that moisture levels are controlled, and proper precautions are taken to prevent water damage.

  • In some cases, buckled laminate floors can be refinished or repaired, but this depends on the extent of the damage. In most cases, replacing the affected boards is the best solution.

  • While there are many steps you can take to prevent laminate floor buckling, hiring a professional installer or flooring expert can help ensure proper installation and maintenance, which reduces the likelihood of buckling in the future.

Conclusion

Preventing laminate floor buckling is all about proper installation, moisture control, and routine maintenance. By understanding the causes of buckling and following the tips outlined in this guide, you can keep your laminate floors in excellent condition for years to come.

7 Tile Installation Mistakes You Need to Avoid

7 Tile Installation Mistakes You Need to Avoid

Tiling your floors and walls is a great way to enhance the comfort, convenience, and style of your home. However, it's crucial to be aware of common tile installation mistakes that can jeopardize the success of your project. By avoiding these errors, you can ensure a beautiful and durable outcome that stands the test of time.

Tile Installation Vancouver

  1. Proper Surface Preparation

Adequate preparation of the surface is paramount to avoid crooked tiles and cracked grout. Be sure to use the appropriate mortar for your project and tape the seams of the underlayment in high-moisture areas like bathrooms.

  2. Sufficient Tile Quantity

Before starting your project, order a swatch or full tile sample to ensure the desired look and avoid color mismatches. Additionally, calculate the necessary quantity of tiles based on the square footage of your room to avoid running out during installation.

  3. Sufficient Grout

Not getting enough grout can lead to mold and mildew growth beneath the tiles. Thoroughly clean the surface before grouting, select the right type of grout, and ensure proper mixing for a thick, spreadable consistency.

  4. Even Tile Spacing

Achieving evenly spaced tiles can be challenging, particularly when dealing with uneven walls or floors. Utilize a level or straightedge during installation to maintain consistent spacing between tiles for a polished finish.

  5. Appropriate Adhesive

Prep the surface diligently and choose the correct adhesive for your specific tiling project. Consider factors such as waterproof requirements and use a trowel with the right notch size to ensure proper distribution and adhesion.

  6. Essential Tools

Having the right tools is crucial for a successful tile installation. Invest in a tile cutter or saw for precise cuts, a trowel for adhesive application, and a rubber or plastic bucket for mixing. Avoid dotting the adhesive in corners, as this can lead to cracks over time.

  7. Consistent Tile Spacing

Achieving consistent tile spacing is key to an aesthetically pleasing result. Dry lay a row of tiles to assess the fit and use cross-shaped tile spacers to maintain even gaps. Spread the adhesive evenly using a notched trowel for optimal adhesion.

By avoiding these tile installation mistakes and implementing best practices, you can ensure a flawless result that adds value and beauty to your home.

How to Prepare Your Home for Flooring Installation

How to Prepare Your Home for Flooring Installation

There are several steps you need to take to prepare your home for flooring installation, and the first thing you have to do is confirm whether or not the installers will move the furniture for you before they begin the project. Ask in advance because the answer will vary as every flooring company offers different services, so you need to discuss this aspect. Some may include the cost of moving furniture in your quote while other companies may not, so it’s important that everyone is on the same page before the day of your installation.

Once this aspect has been confirmed, you can then move on to the following to ensure your home is ready:

Remove Breakables

Any items that can break easily must be removed before the installation date. Do not forget about this step and do it in advance so that no items are forgotten; otherwise, the installers can knock them down and break your favourite pieces. Glass frames, paintings, items from bookshelves, and breakable home décor pieces should all be removed, and it’s also recommended that you remove drapes and anything else that can get in the way.

Disconnect Gas Appliances and Electronics

This is very important if your new flooring is taking place in rooms with gas and larger appliances, so you need to arrange this step if that is the case. This would apply to kitchen and laundry rooms and if you don’t feel comfortable with this step, contact a professional as they will be able to do it safely and correctly.

Determine Whether or Not You Need to Adjust Your Doors

New flooring can change the height of your floors, which may affect your doors and their ability to open and close properly. Many of today’s flooring options can be installed on top of the existing floor covering, but you have to make sure your doors will be able to open and close if that’s the case; otherwise, you will experience big headaches. To prevent this from happening, discuss the height of your new flooring.

Clean Your Floors Properly

This has to be done before your new flooring is installed, and this is true regardless of the type of flooring you are preparing for. This will help eliminate mildew, dust, and mold on the subfloor beforehand and ensure that your new floor does not cover such problems.

Check on Your Indoor Temperature

Your inside temperature can affect the installation of your new floors, so verify this aspect because every type of flooring has recommended temperature conditions, and you need to be aware of this information. It’s also important that your flooring product become acclimated to the room in which they are being installed for a couple of days before installation.

Legacy Custom Floors will help you prepare, and we will provide you with all of the information you need, so if you are interested in new flooring, contact us today!

Why have Hardwood Floors in my Home over Other Flooring Choices?

Why have Hardwood Floors in my Home over Other Flooring Choices?

Hardwood flooring is a very popular option amongst homeowners because of its beauty and the many benefits it provides. This type of flooring has always been a great choice, and consumers continue to select hardwood over other types of flooring.

The natural beauty of wood is just one of its many advantages, and hardwood floors stand out because of their appearance. This aspect alone attracts customers to this type of flooring, and your home will change drastically once hardwood flooring is installed. This material will elevate the appearance of your home, and your space will feel luxurious as a result. Hardwood will also feel much warmer than other types of materials like ceramic, for example, so many people select this type of flooring because they enjoy how it feels under their feet.

You will also have a lot of choices when it comes to hardwood because there are so many different types of woods you can choose from. Oak, cherry and maple are just a few of the options you can consider, and you can also stain your flooring to suit your design needs. Consider your goals and décor preferences because this will help with your choice. Lighter floors will help open up smaller spaces, but darker floors tend to look rich and luxurious, so this would be an option you can consider if you are working with an open area. Staining would allow you to change your mind as the years go by, so this is a huge bonus you would not get with other flooring materials.

Hardwood flooring is a great investment, and this is another reason why so many people gravitate towards this option. The costs may seem high at first, but you have to consider the big picture as this will show that the price will be worth it in the long run. You will see a return on your investment, and if you ever decide to sell your home, this is a feature that will be noticed right away. Potential buyers will appreciate this aspect of the home, and your house will be more valuable as a result. Realtors will highlight this feature because it is a great selling point and your home will sell fast, so you can’t go wrong with this option. The price may be higher than other flooring options, but this material will provide you with a number of advantages, so you have to consider the benefits that other materials cannot provide.

Why Hiring A Flooring Contractor Is A Good Idea

If you are thinking of doing a remodel of your floors, congratulations! It’s a big move that requires professionals, planning, and good communication throughout the process to make sure everything is done well and right. Did you know, a new hardwood floor in a home can increase its overall sale price by at least 2.5% according to real estate experts.

What Type Of Flooring Professional Do I Hire?

We’re glad you asked! Installing a floor in your home is a huge decision and the foundation of your interior design. There are a few different directions you can go when hiring a flooring professional. Though it might be tempting to hire the “Installer” hustling flooring samples out of the back of his van as an economical option - he seems knowledgeable enough, presents himself well, and you think to yourself… How hard can it really be to install these wood boards, I’m sure he will be fine! Well…. Lets just say you don’t want to make the wrong decision here, and there is a huge benefit to visiting a legitimate showroom where you can get educated on different products and get a clear and honest idea of how their business operates.

Hiring The Flooring Contractor

Now, if you are doing a full remodel of your home, it’s likely you are going to be choosing a variation of flooring and wall coverings such as tile, hardwood, vinyl, carpet etc. This can get very overwhelming! So many choices and so many darn opinions you say!? Well, this is why we suggest hiring one quality flooring contractor capable of handling the entire flooring project for you rather than hiring a tile setter from here, a hardwood guy from there and some carpet installer from wherever.. You get the point…

What’s The Benefit?

  1. Having one person as a point of contact for all of the different flooring aspects of your project makes things so so so much easier for you. In addition, all of your invoicing is with one company. Here’s a little inside scoop for you.. You might even be able to convince the contractor to sharpen their pencil, given they are getting a good amount of business supplying and installing ALL of the floor coverings.. But Shhh, you didn’t hear it from us ;)

  2. Having one contractor plan the floor levelling is also a huge benefit. Naturally, your different floor coverings may have different heights and it’s crucial the your sub floor is planned and prepared in accordance with these different heights i.e. where hardwood meets carpet or tile. If this is the responsibility of three different companies or contractors such as tile, hardwood and carpet, things can easily get lost in communication.. If communicated at all!

  3. Construction can be a tough game, and installers are only human. You should expect there to be a few touch ups, adjustments and even possibly some repairs to do upon final inspection of the finished project. This is normal! Tracking down and scheduling multiple different installers to come back and honour their installation warranties can be a long and exhausting challenge.

Now your set! Hopefully this insight can help you on your journey throughout he design and construction process. A good company can make this nearly seamless. Have fun!

How we turned a mistake into a victory

Flooring North Vancouver

Legacy Custom Floors strives to offer our North Shore & Vancouver customers exceptional customer service. Supplying & installing hardwood, tile, carpet, and all floor, and wall coverings

However, let’s face the fact that we all make mistakes! We just made one and we’re proud of it.

Legacy Custom Floors installed engineered hardwood in a customer’s home here on the North Shore. A beautiful white oak hardwood flooring product was installed where a mistake was made.

What did we do

  1. Immediately accept our fault with zero hesitation once we had professionally assessed the situation and determined we were at fault. Zero excuses or delay.

  2. Purchased brand new flooring for the customer and removed and reinstalled new flooring

  3. Gave as many free upgrades as  possible

  4. Had their home cleaned, left them a gift for their troubles, and expressed our appreciation for their patience and business

Was it expensive. Yes. It hurt. Our decision was to not try and get it done for as cheap as possible - as many do when they are paying out of pocket for a mistake - but to do the opposite. In fact, we upgraded their hardwood flooring to a higher quality product that was originally outside their budget.

We decided to spend extra. Give the extra upgrades. Extra service and Extra staff to get it done quickly. All costing more money than technically necessary. Ultimately we ended up wowing the customer and receiving a thank you card, a gift and gleaming review.

We decided that if we have already lost financially, let’s just pay some extra and cash in a win!

We went from that company that made a mistake, to Legacy Custom Floors - the company that went above and beyond to take care of us. That is how we will be remembered and spoken about. This pays us back 10 fold over time and reminds our North Vancouver customers that we stand behind our products and our company with honor.

What is luxury and what does it mean to you?

Flooring North Vancouver

What do you think of when paying for top quality work? Companies that claim to do “luxury”

At Legacy Custom Floors it means a commitment to our customers and repeat clients to deliver an exceptional service on and off site - In our industry that is a two pronged promise. To deliver a superior finished product as well as an exceptional service that must be maintained on and off site. Let’s unpack this..

Service- from the beginning planning phases of a project we commit our time and creativity. Speaking up about design plans that might compliment the space. Educating our customers on what needs to be done to ensure longevity and a high quality finished product. Furthermore, that means not commencing with work if our requested site conditions are not met - simple risk mitigation.

Communication & Systems- a high level of communication with our clients and having a running file of all details on a project - photos, invoices and records updated daily on the job site and in back office for our site technicians and site supervisors.

Price- we strive to maintain a high value service. With this comes pricing components of a project accordingly -  we are not shy to give a “high” price relative to the amount of work we know the task to be. If it is going to take time, resources, and an experienced professional to perform “high detail” work then it must be priced accordingly. Anything less would be adjusting pricing only to secure the project. The latter leads to cutting corners and ultimately a product that is not quality, or “luxury”. As the old adage goes... You get what you pay for.

As a last note we will conclude that paying for “luxury” equates to paying for peace of mind. At Legacy we provide that for our repeat customers.

Have You Ever Considered the Roi of Your Floor?

What's the best flooring to boost your home's resale value? Whether you're selling your place or are just thinking about replacing what's under your feet with something shiny and new, you'll want to carefully consider which type of flooring you pick.

Because flooring matters—a lot. In fact, some experts believe it may be the single biggest factor when it comes to your homes investment.

“Flooring matters tremendously when selling a home,” says Stephan Burke, director of luxury real estate at Cassis Burke Collection with Brown Harris Stevens. “It immediately influences if the buyer will like the house as they walk into every room and hallway, kitchen, and even exterior patio.”

Wood floors are one of the best investments you can make. They're durable, versatile, and most buyers love them. According to real estate experts, the average ROI for installing hardwood floors is about 70% to 80%, and wood floors can boost the sales price of your home as much as 2.5%.

The importance of sub floor preparation and what to look out for.

Hardwood Floor Refinishing Vancouver

The importance of sub floor preparation and what to look out for.

Any good flooring contractor will tell you that the floor coverings he/she is there to install will only ever be as good as the sub floor it is installed upon.

Signs that sub floor preparation is needed

⁃ cracks in concrete - usually indicate settling and generally will house a high spot in and around the cracks
⁃ Previous floor being carpet - carpet has the ability to hide a ton of discrepancies, and carpet installers know this. So check your flatness if carpet is being removed and a hard surface is being installed over it!
⁃ Older homes - settling of wood structured homes will almost always need some floor levelling before installing hard surfaces or floor coverings.

These are only a few, albeit some of the bigger and more obvious things to look for. As a customer, be sure to ask your flooring contractor how he/she deals with sub floor levelling. If it isn’t something that was discussed when the contractor was on site to estimate, nor is there any sign of it on the quote, be wary, as it may be a big unforeseen expense and surprise once the project has begun. This can take a hefty and unexpected notch out of your budget. As this is an expense, it is absolutely crucial to have a flat floor for a sound and structural installation that is warrantied by both installer and floor covering manufacturer.
